Global Maritimes will lay off almost exactly half its editorial staff next spring, when CanWest MediaWorks Inc. opens the first of four new broadcast centres.

The broadcast centres, which will be located in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto, will produce and package all of Global’s news content. The Maritime news program will be a broadcast from a “virtual set” in Dartmouth, but the cameras will be controlled by a western broadcast centre. The show will be packaged in Vancouver starting next April, and move to the Edmonton centre once it is set up.

The layoffs take effect April 1, 2008. Cuts include the executive and senior producer positions for the Maritimes, as well as production and technical support staff. In New Brunswick, five reporters will be reduced to three and two photographers will be reduced to one. In Nova Scotia, Global will employ four reporters instead of five or six.

Canwest is expected to lay off 42 of the 85 news staff in the Maritimes. CanWest is also expected to lay off about 150 more employees working at Global and E! television stations in other parts of the country.
