A new association for magazines has started in Atlantic Canada.

The Atlantic Magazines Association has been in the works since 2006, but started operating this February.

Sheila Blair, co-chair of Metro Guide, is on the AMA board. She says the association started to bring more information to magazine publishers in Atlantic Canada.

“There are many magazine association in Canada but we didn’t have one here,” says Blair. “The publishing industry here is strong, so we decided to start the association.”

Blair says there 81 magazines published in Atlantic Canada. One of those magazines is Atlantic Business Magazine. Dawn Chafe, editor of Atlantic Business, and says AMA is a helpful way to communicate with her peers in the publishing business.

“The organization gives magazine professionals in Atlantic Canada the means to connect,” says Chafe. “We have an opportunity to work collaboratively.”

Chafe thinks the AMA will give the magazine industry a common voice that will strengthen the industry. Blair agrees, saying the association is an advocacy tool that will bring seminars and workshops to magazine workers in the area.

The AMA currently has 12 member magazines and is hoping to grow.
